One of the 165 competitors at the recent Carnoustie Classic certainly arrived in style when he roared up at the international golfing tournament on his Harley Davidson motorbike!
"This Harley is my fiftieth birthday present to me," said German golfer, Thomas Hoess (49), who had travelled to Montrose from his home in Bavaria via some of the most scenic golf courses in Scotland.
After taking a ferry from Amsterdam to Newcastle, Thomas had ridden up the West Coast of Scotland, stopping off to play golf at Portpatrick and Macrahanish. He then toured the very north of Scotland, where he had a game of golf at Durness, before taking his Harley Davidson to Boat of Garten, Fortrose and Cruden Bay, playing golf at every stop!
However, these games of golf were only the warm-up for ex-professional ski instructor Thomas, who had booked his place on the Carnoustie Classic after spotting the popular tournament on the internet. "I thought this would be the perfect end to my golfing tour of Scotland," he said. "And it definitely was!"
Thomas, who is a keen golfer, revealed that, for him, the highlight of the Carnoustie Classic was playing on the Carnoustie Championship Course. "That was a dream for me," he said, "despite the fact that I didn't play very well that day!"
As he packed his golf clubs into the Harley's saddlebags for the journey home, Thomas stressed how much he had enjoyed competing in the Carnoustie Classic. "For me, it's been unbelievable to play on courses like Montrose, Monifieth Medal, Panmure and, of course, Carnoustie, for a week.
"I've had such a good time, I'm sure I'll be back at the Carnoustie Classic next year. However, I may not be able to take my bike as I'd like my friends to experience this tournament too and I suspect they'd prefer to fly to Scotland. But no matter how I get here, I'll be back!"
